In almost all the mountain communities ran a stream that fed the mills and irrigated the fields. Today, a stream in a village no longer has those significant characteristics and is barely noticed. Originally, the water flew through the village, without any problems, as a small thread. Over time, the residents have built in the surroundings or over the water, covering the stream with car parks and fences. Most people are used to looking at a stream as a hindrance. Waterways, with different sizes, noises and temperatures, can be seen as a part of the urban landscape and of sensory perceptions. The project represents an imposing architectural composition, measuring 450mt in length, whose creation invites to various sensory experiences and activities. The residents of the village gathered to formulate their wishes with the designers. ‘The structure', with its shapes, invites the village residents to perceive the changing nature of the water in its daily variations. Few regions and municipalities have been made aware of the opportunities offered by the stream, as an element with a very high potential. The villagers' perception of the project is that of ‘a flow that from a purely natural element turns into a work of civil engineering'.

Motivazione della Giuria

The project addresses a difficult topic, typical of the Alpine region, namely the often-conflictual relationship between residential areas and waterways, re-establishing a balance between the protection against water-related risks and landscape. The shapes of water-regulation structures and the choice of construction materials contribute to generating an ensemble with strong formal features that re-configures and qualifies the urban setting.
